March 23, 2013 - 8:41 pm

visit - Spot on with this write-up, I honestly think this amazing site needs a lot more attention.

I’ll probably be returning to read more, thanks for the information!

February 26, 2013 - 10:00 pm

Shaun Meng - Hi Kali,

Well, my wife, Brittany, is totally right, and we are the coolest, most funest and exciting family. Now all we need is for our awesomeness to be captured with your amazing talent. Your work is great, and I can guarantee that you will have a great time out on a shoot with the Mengs!

February 26, 2013 - 5:16 pm

Melissa Cook - Straight up hip because Heather is my sister in law and those pictures at the top of this post are of Heather, my brother, and my cutie nephews. Other than that, we r a military family relocating to Seattle in May before my husband deploys for six months. Some of your amazing pics would be perfect for him to carry to the far reaches of the earth. Just think…..your photos on the North Pole ……literally. Peace.

February 26, 2013 - 4:37 pm

Michelle Georgeson - Why are we the hippiest? hmmm…well Allen and I have been married for 20 years, get us photographed before we get much older. Its been a long time since the last family photo. My kids are growing up and our oldest is graduating high school. I would love to have a new family photo on the wall from Kali to capture this last year. Oh and did I mention we have the most beautiful, photogenic children. :) Love this idea and we hope to be chosen.

February 26, 2013 - 4:15 pm

Ashley Olsen - Searching for a hip family? Look no further! Top five reasons we are the hippest family around:
5: My husband looks hot dang in a pair of skinny jeans.
4: We listened to the Wiggles before they went mainstream.
3:We live in Europe…can’t get more hip than that! We have access to some of the worlds finest chocolates and delicacies. What do you want, macaroons? Belgian waffles? You name it. For reals!
2: We have a baby girl with enough hair for faux-hawks, pompadour, or other hipster ‘dos.
1:Our girls know a thing or two about photography… (http://youtu.be/fEa_3tAM4Cc)

We would love to win this awesomely hip contest! I’ve always dreamed of having you take hip pictures of us! You rock!

February 26, 2013 - 3:45 pm

Melani Verner - Oh this is such a fun game! Please pick our family! We don’t need accessories to be hip and stylin’, we are just ourselves, need I say more? We have four children – 2 girls and little twin boys. We love you Kali and love your work! We would love to win a free session with you and your amazing talent! :)

February 26, 2013 - 10:03 am

Charise Apken - Well, you know us…hip just describes us to a “T”, right?! ;) We are hip in the fact that me and the three girls all have a set of cute boots, rain boots, snow boots…all of which are a necessity. We are also hip because I haven’t a lick of living room furniture, which is a bit stale, but also makes for awesome rounds of family volleyball, football, bean bag tossing, and wrestling fun without dodging furniture. We are hip because we play together and like each other. Another portrait session is a great way to document that love!!

February 26, 2013 - 8:23 am

Terilyn Dallon - 3 generations of fun, love, support and definitely some crazy. :-)

February 26, 2013 - 7:22 am

Hanna Madsen - Why my little family deserves a photo shoot from the one and only Kali Taylor Leenstra?! Hmm, perhaps because I’ve probably known you longer then anyone who has entered for this drawing and so it would only be a natural event that needs to happen so you can give me feedback on if my girls are crazier or calmer then I was while we grew up. :) Whenever you post pictures from weddings and different shoots that you do I ALWAYS think to myself, why can’t I live closer to Kali so she can take pictures of MY family?! -Good old East Coast. With the dates that you have outlined in this drawing we will be in Southern CA to qualify for this wonderful experience.. coincidence? I think not. haha. You are an amazing photographer and with the energy and activity level of my little family we hardly ever get pictures that are worthy of the fireplace.. seriously. To add to that we have never had our family professionally photographed because Dan works spuratic, crazy hours so lining up schedules with someone with a camera is impossible. PLEASE PICK US, PLEASE PICK US!!!

February 26, 2013 - 6:48 am

Kristi Karren - I’m not sure if a stay-at-home-kiltmaker mom and a Chief Marketing officer dad are hip, but our kids sure make us that way. This spring marks the last spring we’ll have together before our oldest graduates HS and moves on to somewhere that Heaven only knows as a young missionary. Holy Cow!! An awesome photo shoot would be really great, especially now.

February 26, 2013 - 12:06 am

Laura Dallon - The urban dictionary defines hip as, “Cooler than cool, the pinnacle of what is “it”. Beyond all trends and conventional coolness.” To paraphrase Bill Murray in one of our favorite movies, “Us, us, us, us… We’re real close on this one!” My totally hip husband and I (his not quite as hip wife) have two chubby cheeked, blue eyed toddlers, a boy and a girl. You photographed us once before as part of a group session with extended family (the Dallons, do you remember us?) We adore the shots you took of our family a year ago and would be thrilled to have current pictures to put in our home. And we deserve it because life at our house is noisy, fun, sometimes smelly, and always full of love; in other words, the pinnacle of what is “it”!

February 25, 2013 - 11:52 pm

Briana - I would love to win this one! We are so excited to be welcoming a second baby boy to our family this May and would love to celebrate with some updated family pictures! I could say I’m hip because I love your photography right!? Not that I usually am that hip, but we are a loving little family that loves to spend time together, wether its camping, playing games, gardening, or going to the park. Those things are hip right?

February 25, 2013 - 11:25 pm

Jennifer - We would love a family shoot with our new addition of our puppy, TJ! He won’t stay small for much longer and we would love to capture the moments while he is young :)

February 25, 2013 - 11:13 pm

Kristen Smith - Kali! I just saw this post and was so excited about it! You already know we love your photography and I’m thinking, two weddings with my family isn’t enough… although you have probably had enough of Brett’s ridiculous dancing! ;)

We’ll need to find a ocean cruiser bike with a basket for the wee one this time though!

Brett and I would absolutely love to work with you again when our June Bug arrives!

February 25, 2013 - 11:00 pm

Matthew Ramirez - How are we hip? That is a question for the ages! First off I drive a min-van, I have a gaggle of kids (5 if you didn’t know what a gaggle is), I am a socially awkward engineer who sits in a cubicle 10 hours a day ( I know, don’t be jealous), but one day I aspire to be a professional cat rancher! I have an extensive collection of Saved by the bell and Step by Step memorabilia and can almost recite any Disney movie ever made thanks to my gaggle (5 again) of kids. When Michelle and I go out on hot dates on a Thursday night we usually chill to the sounds of Vanilla Ice, M.C. Hammer, or Kidz bop! I don’t know that I need to say much more for you to get a feel of our pure awesomeness that is the Ram Fam! Choose us and you will be bored out of your mind all while trying to keep 5 kids looking at the camera and saying cheese for the millionth time!

February 25, 2013 - 10:40 pm

Jenn Underwood - I would love to win this!!! You do beautiful work and I’m sad to admit that we’ve never had family photographs taken. Not sure how hip we are, but I know you’d find our beauty in your lens!

February 25, 2013 - 10:24 pm

Mauvia Sorensen - This is a great idea, and very.sweet. We are not very hip and live in Wenatchee so we are probably not in consideration, but we do have a load of red hair and we love your work. Thanks for being so generous!

February 25, 2013 - 4:58 pm

Katie - We are a hip crazy country family of 7! We are a very happy and unusual blended family!! We love the outdoors and spending as much time together as a family! Unfortunatly with money and time we have not had a family picture in years! My youngest almost 3 is not in a complete family picture yet! How I would appreciate a family picture representing all 5 kids personalities!! It would be my prize possesion on my wall!! Thank you for this opportunity!! Take care!!!

February 25, 2013 - 3:55 pm

McKell Costa - Well the only thing I think of when I think of Hip and my family are the hips I have gotten from having my family hahaha! We are kind of quirky and nerdy in a hippy way, maybe that counts! And of course just like everyone else it would be an honor to have our little family captured on film through your eyes!
Keep up the amazing work!

February 24, 2013 - 9:29 pm

Raquel Leal - I would LOVE to win a family session with you! We can meet you in SoCal or Seattle! I am dying to have a film session of our family done and you are so amazing at what you do! Plus we are totes hip and I think our kids would have lots of fun playing together too! <3

February 24, 2013 - 9:09 pm

Contessa Diseth - Well I just had my son 4 months ago and we have no family pictures together. Right now we don’t have money and it would be a blessing if we won !! My son Bentley is the most happiest baby ever & I would love to get some pics of our lil family all together! <3

February 24, 2013 - 7:33 pm

Heather maggio - We all deserve something fun, so to say I’m more deserving then the next person feels weird to me. However, I would love to win this because my three girls are growing up so fast and I’m a horrible photographer:-( I just can’t capture them and who they are in photos. When we have been able to afford a photographer, I feel I can see my princesses soul and true personality. It has been too long since we had family pictures and I fear time is slipping away. I would love to capture my little girls, age 11, 8, and 6 before I look back on teenagers who are too busy for family pictures. thank you for your blog and chance to win

February 23, 2013 - 11:42 pm

Sarah Sweetman - Hi there :) My name is Sarah Sweetman. First of all, thank you for offering this session – it is super, super generous of you – whom ever wins it will be blessed indeed.
I have sat down to write to you so many times…and I find myself asking the questions of are we hip enough…what makes us more unique…different from every other wonderful family that would love to win too. I am not sure I have come up with the answer…but unless I write something, you will never know who we are.
Well…I guess I should just start with a little bit about us. We are originally from New Zealand – so yes, we talk funny – we say ‘spa’ when you say ‘hot tub’ and ‘jandal’ to your ‘flip flops’ :) and I pronounce car as kah :) haha. :)
We moved to the PNW almost 5 years ago – we came for adventure and we found it for sure – we love the great outdoors – hiking and camping but are equally as happy pottering around home.
I have a lovely husband Steve (we have been married almost 12 years) and 2 kids – Caleb (8) and Brianna (6).
We LOVE each other – not just kind of…really really love each other. We just love hanging out together – I mean, this morning we set up a tent on our giant deck outdoors and camped – sleeping bags and all – we even put a little campfire in our outdoor BBQ so we could roast marshmallows. It was freezing, but so so much fun.
I am a photographer by trade – I love to capture the memories and moments for my clients – to capture a moment in time for them to be cherished for generations.
BUT…I am also a mom.
and for me the pull of documenting our lives in photos, and actually being present to enjoy the moments without a camera in front of me… is a constant conflict.
I want to remember every smile, every giggle, every game, every booboo – but I also want to be the one tickling, kissing, hugging, playing, dancing. So more often than not, I am not in the photos, or the moment doesn’t get documented as I want my kids to remember I was THERE and not kind-of-there.
So, it makes me cherish when someone else can take our photos even more – as I can both be in the photos – with each fun little moment, AND have the lasting evidence :)
I have always wanted photos taken in the morning – jumping and cuddling on the bed, pillow fights and wrestling, reading books, breakfast eating…

I am not sure you would describe us as “hip” – although I am open to ideas on styling or settings etc. if you had something in mind. We are down to earth, fun loving, goofy people :)
Gosh, this has turned into a novel – I just wanted to tell you a little about us. The Sweetmans. :) I am chatty – can you tell?
Thanks again for even letting me enter – I cant wait to see the results. My kindest regards, Sarah

February 23, 2013 - 9:12 pm

Margeemay Wilson - us…Well if you don’t count a Sears portrait 8 years ago, which I don’t (: … All of us have big personalities and live life passionately. Tho I think of myself hip in an artsy way and my kiddos awesomely hip, my engineer husband is well, let’s just say he could use a boost! We live in a hundred year old house and love all things vintage! When it comes to the important things tho, we love each other and I would be honored to have that captured.

February 23, 2013 - 9:10 pm

Margeemay Wilson - We are a family of five and never have had an official family portrait taken of us…Well if you don’t count a Sears portrait 8 years ago, which I don’t (: … All of us have big personalities and live life passionately. Tho I think of myself hip in an artsy way and my kiddos awesomely hip, my engineer husband is well, let’s just say he could use a boost! We live in a hundred year old house and love all things vintage! When it comes to the important things tho, we love each other and I would be honored to have that captured.

February 23, 2013 - 3:44 pm

Amy - OOOO! Please pick us….wait all these others are awesome too! I’m glad I’m not you stuck picking!!!
Why is our family hip enough?! I can’t say that we are hip enough but we are pretty crazy! Brad and I have had a cross border long distance romance and once we were married and in the same country we were crazy enough to add three monkey’s to our family in three and a half years. Now we are about to embark on a new adventure as a family. We are getting ready to leave the sweet Pacific Northwest and start all over again in Canada! Living through the immigration process is pretty crazy but moving a family of five over six thousand miles in a two door Toyota Echo is INSANE!!! I would love to have some awesome photos of us in the place that we fell in love and welcomed out sweet babies who are handling the idea of such a massive change and move like champs!

February 23, 2013 - 2:03 pm

Sherlyn Moon - We are the Moon’s we are a crazy, hip, fun loving family who has their share of up’s and downs. I keep dreaming of a big wall of amazing pictures of my family and right in the middle it will say “I Love You to the Moon and Back”. I would love you to take those “amazing pictures” of my babies, and all of their babies, so my dream will come true! Our family is at crossroads this year with many dispersing in many directions. A great photo shoot is just what we need to send everyone on their way!

February 23, 2013 - 8:21 am

angie cox - There are some long ones on here so Im going to try to keep mine simple as that is our family. Simply awesome! 15 years as a couple with two kids are anything but average. They dont stay still for a camera, so if you want lifestyle – with us that is what you will get. Dad is a DORK, he plays with his girls like there is childhood buddies. Were not afraid to get dirty and down for anything you can throw at us. Jeremy and I have worked hard ever since he lost his job 3 years ago to build businesses that will support our kids and give them the life I had always dreamed for them. Today we are closer to that but still working our tails off to complete it. Our new home is in the country now where we enjoy a much simpler life. A little 1960′s rambler with a big yard and cherry tree with a homemade swing. I think a session in our new home done lifestyle would be so very perfect and the cherry on the top of our dream. This home is where we wanted to be and worked to for the last 15 years. I love your work and I think it would fit it perfectly. Angie

February 23, 2013 - 1:20 am

Erin Snyder - Hi! I’m Erin, mother of twin 3 year old boys who are handfuls one moment and a complete joys the next. And they are a photographers dream! Sweet, cute and have curly hair like their bald father had at their age. People dont beleive when i tell them but they are the spitting image of their father. Definitely no question they are his! lol We have been so busy the last few years that we haven’t been able to get family photos done. My boys are growing up so fast and I want to capture this time and moment with their cute little faces, hands and feet before I blink and they are suddenly sixteen and driving. Please pick us, I would love to have you capture this moment in our lives!

February 22, 2013 - 11:01 pm

Lexia - oh man, please pick us!!
why do we deserve this? because i’m a photographer i am always documenting for other people, capturing their moments and their lives. i document people’s weddings yet we could never afford our own so we eloped and had a point and shoot. i document people’s families in lifestyle sessions (just like this!) but we’ve never had one of our own. the last time all four of us got into the same photograph was over 2 years ago. i dont want to be the mom that is absent from the family albums. i dont want my kids to look back and wonder why mama never hugged or kissed them in pictures, why it appears that only daddy was ever around. When they look back on their family albums i want them to see me holding them, and for that to elicit memories of what it felt like. how it felt to be so small and to be wrapped up in their mama’s arms. when i am older and my babies no longer fit into my lap, i want to be able to have a visual record of what that ‘felt’ like. i want to remember the weight of their bodies on my chest and in my arms and on my shoulders. i want to see and feel what their little hands felt like as they pulled my finger along to come see something. i hate that i’m not in our pictures, and this year i have to vow to change that. help us kali!
why might we make good subjects? well, we’ve JUST moved to portland! we are not yet moved into a cute house, and are living in a little apartment right now. BUT we DO have an all white room with a mattress on the floor with lots of white sheets and bedding. that’s it…. 1 bedroom, 1 mattress, 4 people, 2 dogs, and lots-o-white. a few terrariums, very minimalistic/modern and big windows. in June we’ll be moving to a cute cute cute historic home that we’ll be renovating with TONS of white, hardwood floors, raw ceilings, black framed windows and lots of mid-century modern and rustic decor. my favorite design blog is the rustic modernist, which will be our inspiration for everything (better yet, just check out the pinterest board: http://pinterest.com/lexiafrank/for-the-home/). also, i have a wealth of clothes that we can style, from flowy whimsical dresses to big off the shoulder white t-shirts for lounging in the bed. my kiddos are the coolest 2 and 4 year olds ever, with their shaggy hair, bed-wrestling tactics, and their LOVE of cuddling each other (boys cuddling are the sweetest things ever). we love to go outdoors to hike and skip stones in rivers, head to the rocky coast, Dustin (my super handsome husband…) plays guitar, Tav (my four year old) plays the violin, and i was a ballet dancer and illustrator. we’re big into art at our house, with a full size easel and lots of paint and canvases. ok, so we’re pretty hip. and we are also in need of some photography that includes us as a whole, because although my boys do not lack for photos of themselves, we lack for the ‘realness’ of a lifestyle session with us actually in it. and, we would APPRECIATE you. there is nothing worse than doing something for free and not being fully appreciated. but this would mean so much to me, and we would be BEYOND grateful! whoever wins this is LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY and i hope they understand the value of what is being offered here!

February 22, 2013 - 10:20 pm

whitney - ummmmm. duh. we just moved into a new (actaully old. 1912 to be exact. with great character) home and i would KILL to have a relaxed family session here! YES PLEASE!

February 22, 2013 - 10:17 pm

Whitney - ummmmmm. duh. we just moved into a new (but really old. 1912 to be exact) home and I would KILL to have a relaxed family session here! YES PLEASE.

February 22, 2013 - 9:26 pm

Kali Vise - Oops I put in my email wrong thanks to my awesome iPhone ;)

February 22, 2013 - 9:24 pm

Kali Vise - Oh man, I wish we were hip! We are pretty fun though, I know that for sure! We don’t have a long history as a family but in the past 4 years we have packed in as much as possible. From love at first sight, to planning a wedding in 4 months to welcoming our son this last April and now awaiting on daughters arrival in July….we love our life and we love living it to the fullest. Documenting our life with pictures is one of our favorite things. We have photographed our life since the night we first met. I think there is something so lovely about real film photos and being able to decorate our home with amazing pictures of our family of four would mean so much to us!!

February 22, 2013 - 5:10 pm

Brittany Meng - On the westside of Seattle I wasn’t born but rasied and where I spent most of my days, chillin out relaxing and actin all cool, till we moved to Vegas so my husband could go to Law school. ( I totally hope that you sang that in a Will Smith’s voice)
We visit Washington area a lot and I can’t get enough of Southern California so where ever you go we will be there and it would be totally awesome if you could take our family pictures.
I love your style and I am in love with film so that would be even awesomer! (that is a word! Right?) Ok, I hope this is coming off fun and not just annoying and I am trying way to hard to be hip and cool so I hope you choose us! The Mengs!
Thanks!

February 22, 2013 - 5:07 pm

Rhianna - I am not necessarily hip, but our family rocks. We’ve been through a lot in the last few years with my husband losing his job therefore making us have to move into my inlaws house for a year, which in the middle of that time our 3rd child was born. Things have finally started looking up for us when my husband got a job here in Seattle and we moved into our own home (which is pretty retro and hip!) and are feeling very blessed with all the things that have turned around in our lives. We are finally blessed with being a family again after feeling very disjointed during our time between jobs and living in someone else’s home.
I’ve been hoping to get some real family pics done since our family has grown so much in the last few years and we didn’t have the finances to afford an actual session with a photographer, although my sister took some pretty good pictures of us. Lifestyle photos capture such an amazing side of things and I’ve never experienced a lifestyle session. I love and appreciate your perspective in photography. Thanks for considering my family of 5…. Kyle, Rhianna, Mayah (4.5), Sammy (3), and Aubrey (1.5). :)

February 22, 2013 - 4:34 pm

Tera - Hey Kali! Well my fam isn’t exactly hip, just pretty awesome! Haha! We don’t really deserve to win, but it would be rad to have some new family pics. Maybe we can bump into each other when you’re in town. Ramona reunion!!!

February 22, 2013 - 3:49 pm

Melanie Cameron - We are crazy, disjointed, unorganized, and at times a little dysfunctional. Our four kids keep us busy. They like to quarrel, but in the end, would do anything to protect each other…maybe even adore each other (though they won’t admit it!) Having our youngest with disabilities has made our family more compassionate, our kids more accepting. All these things may not make us hip, but they make us REAL (REALLY HIP? Ha ha) ;)

February 22, 2013 - 3:26 pm

Mary - We’re not hip…unless that means flannel-wearing, urban-gardening, gluten-free, bread-making, home-schooling kind of people :) I was just thinking the other day that our family is overdue for a portrait for our accent wall :)

February 22, 2013 - 3:18 pm

Meredith - I have spent the last few years getting really beaten down. I lost my sister, a couple pregnancies, and feared I would lose my mind. But with the help of my family (particularly my mom and aunts) I have really been able to feel almost whole again. And now I have this beautiful daughter. I cannot wait to watch her grow, as painful as it will be to do so without my sister, and make her feel as much a part of this sisterhood of women as I do. I look forward to pointing back to this time in my life to illustrate to her that we have so much more strength in us than we could ever imagine.

February 22, 2013 - 3:01 pm

February 22, 2013 - 2:41 pm

Lena Peterson - My name is Lena and I am nerdy, weird, and socially awkward. My family is just as quirky as I am and we live our lives just a little bit off the beaten path. Two kids, Evelyn & Eisley, lights of my life. Love you work and would love to be able to have some photos done by you!

If you have the right styling, photography style and location it IS more than possible. All shot with FILM (my absolute favorite medium to use)

If you are interested in hiring me to shoot your wedding email me Kali@kaliluphoto.com

Ashley S. - Gorgeous photos Kali! The light is so beautiful in all of them but I really love it in the one where she is sitting in the chair, looking down – to the left of the one where the couple is holding hands, looking at each other. You are very talented and an inspiration.
